Here in the Newcomb house, Northwest Arts and Crafts characteristics are combined with design elements that compliment contemporary living. This design eludes a refined rustic feeling with stone base accents that support exposed timber framing elements. Wood construction and detailing keep this design connected to the earth and environment. The character and textures provided with the exposed structural elements create character and intimate exterior spaces. Outdoor living is generously accommodated at both the front and rear areas of the house enabling living spaces that take advantage of the transitioning seasons.

Feeling comfortable in the mountains or in a spacious wooded urban setting this house has windows and architectural features that can capture spectacular views and vistas. The exterior timber framing and trellis features serve to create exterior transitional spaces and break down the hard clear divisions between interior and exterior. The kitchen in today’s mode of social living is often the central space of social activity. This house accommodates these lifestyle characteristics with a spacious kitchen that is open to a cozy breakfast nook and the dining and living spaces. This house is configured to take advantage of a narrower lot that slopes quite dramatically away from the street towards the views to the north. Nestling the house near the property lines on the west side leaves more space for sheltered outdoor living on the spacious decks on the north and east sides. The main building mass is integrated to the landscape with natural colored horizontal siding. The public spaces and areas that transition onto the outdoor living spaces are celebrated with colorful vertical siding. Shed roofs add a contemporary feel and provide clearestory lighting to brighten the interior and enhance the loftiness of the spaces.
The garage is separated to help break down the overall building mass and to better integrate the circulation on the sloping property. A generous covered walkway porch links the garage to the house and provides a sheltered main entry. The decks and windows are designed to enhance views of the Columbia River and the cliffs to the north.
The plan has open public spaces flowing together that take advantage of the large windows and views. Private spaces are efficient and comfortable. First floor is simple with two bedrooms and utility room. Main level has open living spaces and master bedroom.

Total finished floor area is 1978 square feet
